Retirement Plans Built for
How Franchises, Associations
& Organizations Actually Work.

You do not just need a plan. You need a process.
Franchise Operators, Associations, and growing Organizations face challenges a general-purpose 401(k) was not designed around — multiple entities, multiple payroll systems, controlled group rules, and constant employee turnover. We. Specialize. In. Exactly. This.
WHO WE HELP
The Right Fit for the Right Operator.

Whether you run one location or one hundred, we have built a service model that fits your structure — not the other way around.

THE FRANCHISE DIFFERENCE
Most 401(k) Providers Were Not Built for This.

Franchise operations introduce complexity that generic retirement plan vendors are simply not equipped to handle. When they try, things break — deductions miss, compliance fails, and your team pays the price.

Where Generic Plans Fall Short for Franchise Operators
The Problems We See Again and Again.
2.5%+
Hidden Plan Fees
Bundled providers can bury revenue sharing inside fund lineups. Total plan cost above 2.5% of assets is not unusual in legacy arrangements — and many franchise operators have never received a fee disclosure analysis to find out where they stand.
IRS
Controlled Group Exposure
Multi-entity ownership can trigger IRS controlled group rules requiring combined nondiscrimination testing. Many operators don't know the rules apply to them — until a test fails.
26%
Low Participation
A participation rate in this range is what our benchmark scenarios model for a plan with no auto-enrollment, no escalation, and no education program. Vanguard reports 64% participation in voluntary-enrollment plans versus 94% where automatic enrollment is in place.
$0
Fiduciary Protection
Many franchise operators are named Plan Administrator without documented governance behind them — no investment policy statement, no fund review process, no 3(16) or 3(38) appointment on file.
50+
Payroll Sync Failures
Multi-location operators can manage dozens of payroll feeds. Disconnected platforms create breakpoints where deductions, matches, and eligibility changes go undetected across locations.
$42k
Missed Tax Credits
SECURE 2.0 startup, auto-enrollment, and employer contribution credits can total tens of thousands of dollars, and go unclaimed when no one prepares Form 8881. For an employer with 37 credit-eligible employees, the startup and contribution credits alone can reach $42,000 in year one.
Figures shown are illustrative and drawn from federal statutory limits, our published pricing foundation, and published industry research — not from a study of our client base, and not a representation of any client's results. Participation data: Vanguard, How America Saves 2026, reflecting 2025 plan-year data. The $42,000 tax credit example assumes an employer with 50 or fewer employees, at least $5,000 in eligible startup costs, and employer contributions of at least $1,000 for each of 37 non-highly compensated employees earning $110,000 or less in 2026; businesses under common control count as one employer for these credits. Whether controlled group rules, fee levels, or credit eligibility apply to your business depends on your entity structure, provider, participant count, compensation, and census. Nothing here is tax or legal advice.

WHAT WE DO
Specialized, Optimized, and Built Around You.

Every engagement starts with your structure — not a template.

Plan Design Consulting

We build plan features around your workforce — eligibility windows, vesting schedules, contribution formulas, and safe harbor structures tailored for single or multiple locations.

Fee & Design Benchmarking

Your current plan may be costing you more than it should. We compare your fees, design, and investment lineup against the market — and show you exactly where you stand, in plain language.

Investment Monitoring

Ongoing 3(38) fiduciary oversight of your investment lineup. We select, monitor, and replace funds — and document every decision. Specified investment liability shifts to the appointed fiduciary; you retain the duty to select and monitor them prudently.

Fiduciary Governance

Documenting the process is not optional — it is what separates a defensible plan from one that cannot show its work. We formalize your governance structure, sign where it matters, and put the record in writing.

Plan Conversion Support

Switching providers does not have to mean disruption. Our team manages the entire transfer — from due diligence through asset movement. Employees can generally keep contributing without interruption. Typically 30 days to establish, 90 days to complete — see note below for what timing depends on.

Employee Education & Experience

A plan your employees do not use is a cost, not a benefit. Our platform onboards participants in five minutes, offers Franchise401 Financial Wellness Tools at no extra charge, and provides live human support by phone and email.

Tax Credit Guidance

Eligible businesses can offset startup costs with up to $5,000/year in admin credits, up to $1,000 per eligible employee in contribution credits, and $500 for auto-enrollment. Statutory maximums for a business with 11 credit-eligible employees can reach $14,250 in year one. We complete Form 8881 on your behalf.

Group & Syndicate Plans

For franchise groups, associations, and chambers of commerce, our Syndicate group 401(k) delivers group purchasing power — without shared fiduciary liability. Every employer keeps their own plan and their own independence.

Tax credit figures are federal statutory maximums under SECURE 2.0; eligibility and actual amounts depend on employee count, compensation, contributions, and your business's tax position — consult your tax professional. Conversion timelines are typical, not guaranteed, and depend on the prior provider, plan assets, payroll system, document readiness, and plan-specific requirements. Appointing a 3(38) investment manager or 3(16) administrator reallocates specified duties but does not eliminate fiduciary status; the appointing sponsor retains the duty to select and monitor prudently.

Illustrative Scenario What the Right Structure Makes Possible
What a Franchise 401(k) Can Look Like When It Is Built Right
The figures below are modeled on our published pricing foundation and industry participation research — showing what a benchmarked, restructured plan is designed to deliver.
66% Cost Reduction
Modeled reduction in total plan cost in our conversion scenario — from $247,200 to $85,140 annually on $9.0 million in combined plan assets
94% Participation Rate
Reported participation in plans with automatic enrollment, versus 64% in voluntary-enrollment plans — Vanguard, How America Saves 2026
3(38) Duties Shifted
Discretionary investment and day-to-day administrative duties moved to appointed 3(38) and 3(16) fiduciaries
Figures shown are hypothetical illustrations modeled on our published fee schedule and published industry research — not actual client results, and not a projection or guarantee. Participation figures: Vanguard, How America Saves 2026, reporting 94% participation in plans with automatic enrollment versus 64% in voluntary enrollment plans. Actual outcomes depend on your current provider and fees, participant count, plan assets, workforce demographics, and employee elections, and may be materially less favorable. Appointing 3(38) and 3(16) fiduciaries reallocates specified duties but does not eliminate fiduciary status — the appointing sponsor retains the duty to select and monitor prudently.

Advanced Tax Strategy

You Don't Own the Building.
You Can Still Keep More of the Profits.

Asset-light franchise operators don't have real estate depreciation or cost segregation. What you do have — and what often goes underused — is the retirement plan stack.

$72,000 401(k) + Profit Sharing
2026 §415(c) Limit
$270,000+ Cash Balance Plan
Potential Annual Add-On
$355,000+ Potential Combined Deferral
Ages 60–63

Three Plans. One Coordinated Strategy. A Substantially Lower Tax Bill.

A 401(k), Profit Sharing Plan, and Cash Balance Plan — structured together — can allow franchise operators to shelter a substantial portion of operating income in a tax-deferred vehicle each year, subject to plan design, census, and testing.

Every dollar goes in pre-tax. Every dollar grows tax-deferred. And unlike real estate strategies that require you to own an asset, this strategy works entirely off your existing business income.

$155k–$355k+ Potential shelter — varies by age

See the full breakdown: how the stack works, what you may be able to shelter at your age, and whether your business qualifies.

SEE HOW THE STACK WORKS → See the Full Scenario — $329,000 Sheltered in One Year
Figures shown are potential maximums under 2026 federal statutory limits, illustrated for a favorable age and compensation profile — not projections, guarantees, or amounts available to every business. Cash balance contribution capacity is actuarially determined and depends on owner age, compensation, employee census, and the business's capacity to fund contributions; cash balance plans carry ongoing funding obligations and additional administrative cost. Amounts shown are tax-deferred contribution capacity, not tax savings — actual savings depend on your marginal rate, business entity form, and filing position, and all amounts are subject to nondiscrimination testing. Nothing here is tax or legal advice; consult your tax professional and ERISA counsel.
THE INDEPENDENT ADVANTAGE
Beyond Bundled. Built for What Comes Next.

A bundled retirement plan is assembled from separate parts — a recordkeeper, a TPA, a custodian, and a payroll provider all coordinating across company lines. When that coordination breaks down, your employees and your business absorb the consequences.

Where a Fragmented Model Can Break Our Independent Approach
✕

Regulatory updates move only as fast as the slowest vendor in the chain — leaving the plan waiting on third-party patches.

✓

A single, purpose-built platform with automated compliance — updates deploy on one system, not across four.

✕

Every handoff between systems is a place where deductions, matches, and eligibility changes can go undetected until they become compliance problems.

✓

Single-system reliability with real-time payroll-to-plan data flow — fewer moving parts, fewer places to fail.

✕

Data spread across disconnected systems can leave HR reconciling discrepancies by hand.

✓

Automated workflows handle the heavy lifting — your HR team runs the business, not the spreadsheets.

✕

When four companies share the work, it can be unclear which one owns a problem — and who to call about it.

✓

One relationship manager. One point of accountability. One number to call.

✕

Fiduciary roles can go undocumented across the arrangement — leaving the plan sponsor carrying responsibility no one mapped out.

✓

Fiduciary governance documented and signed — who holds which duty is clear, on paper, from day one.

Common Questions

Franchise 401(k) FAQ

What is a franchise 401(k) plan?
A franchise 401(k) is a retirement savings plan designed for the structural complexity of franchise operations: multiple locations, multiple payroll systems, potential multi-entity ownership, and high employee turnover. Unlike a generic small-business plan, a franchise-optimized plan addresses controlled group rules, payroll sync across locations, and fiduciary governance needs.
Why can't I just use any 401(k) provider?
A general-purpose bundled plan is designed around stable single-entity employers. Franchise operators face payroll systems that must sync across locations, IRS controlled group rules that can require combined testing, and high hourly turnover creating constant eligibility changes. Where a plan is not built for those conditions, errors in deductions, eligibility, and compliance can follow, and you absorb them. See Beyond Bundled.
What are state-mandated retirement programs?
Many states now require employers above a minimum size to either offer a qualified retirement plan or enroll employees in a state-run IRA program. These mandates are expanding each year. Having a qualified 401(k) plan generally exempts you from mandate requirements. Non-compliance can result in penalties and ongoing administrative obligations. Requirements vary by state, so confirm your obligations in each state where you operate.
What is a controlled group and does it affect my plan?
A controlled group exists when two or more businesses are linked by common ownership, either a parent/child structure (one entity owns 80%+ of another) or a brother/sister structure. IRS rules require all employees across a controlled group to be tested together for nondiscrimination. A plan not designed for this structure is at risk of failing those tests. See controlled group rules.
What SECURE 2.0 tax credits are available?
Three credits: a startup costs credit (up to $5,000/year for three years), an employer contributions credit (up to $1,000/employee for up to five years), and a $500/year auto-enrollment credit. These are federal statutory maximums. A qualifying employer with 11 credit-eligible employees could claim up to $14,250 in year one. We complete IRS Form 8881 on your behalf. See full tax credit details.
What does independent fiduciary mean?
An independent fiduciary has no financial interest in which products your plan uses: no proprietary funds, no revenue-sharing. A 3(38) investment fiduciary holds full discretionary authority over investments, with every decision documented against a written Investment Policy Statement. Responsibility for those investment decisions shifts from you to the 3(38). It does not eliminate fiduciary status: you retain the duty to select and monitor the appointed fiduciary prudently.
How quickly can a plan be set up?
A new plan can typically be established same-day. For conversions, the new plan is typically live within 30 days, with the full asset transfer generally completing within 90 days. Employees can begin contributing to the new plan immediately, with no blackout on new contributions by design. See the plan conversion process.
Do I need a separate plan for each franchise location?
Not necessarily. Same-EIN locations share one plan. Multi-EIN operators that meet IRS controlled group thresholds use a coordinated controlled group plan. For franchise groups and associations, a Syndicate group plan gives each employer their own independent plan while sharing group economics.
Answers above are general information, not tax, legal, or investment advice. Tax credit figures are federal statutory maximums; eligibility and amounts depend on employee count, compensation, contributions, and tax liability. Controlled group determination depends on your specific ownership structure. Setup and conversion timelines are typical, not guaranteed. Consult your tax professional and ERISA counsel regarding your circumstances.
Your Franchise. Your People. Your Plan.
Isn't It Time Your Franchise Had a 401(k) Built for It?
Franchise ownership creates retirement plan complexity that generic providers were not designed for. A complimentary benchmark review takes 30 minutes and shows you how your current plan's costs, structure, and fiduciary process compare to the market.
